Tournament Strategy - Early Blind Levels

Nicholas's picture

There are two approaches players use in the first few blind levels of a poker tournament: (1) play conservatively and focus on survival (2) attack right from the start and build your stack risking a lot more. Which approach works better for you? What do you think, which approach is better in general?

I think everybody has to find

I think everybody has to find his/her own style. For some people loose play at early blind levels works extremely well and they get hold of a lot of chips. This is a difficult style and takes a lot of time and talent to master. At the same time with my cash game background I find that very tight play is much more suitable and successful for me, so that is how I play. I tried the other approach and I think I am finally ready to give up on it.

When i play a tournament in

When i play a tournament in the first 30 minutes i like to watch the enemies and make notes about them.Especially about their betting patterns.I observe what they do if the community cards are good for their hole cards and what they do if those are not. When i already collected enough information about my enemies i can play more cards. When I see what they do, I can put them on a short range of hands they have.
